You may want to ask :

  • Can I visit your home to see the completed job ?
  • Were you satisfied with the project? Was it completed on time ?
  • Did the contractor keep you informed about the status of the project ?
  • Were there unexpected costs? If so, what were they ?
  • Did workers show up on time? Did they clean up after finishing the job ?
  • Would you recommend the contractor ?
  • Would you use the contractor again?

Remember :

  • Try not to rush into starting the project.
  • Get estimates from more than one reputable contractor.
  • Find out what neighbors are paying for similar work.
  • Beware of contractors who claim: "I can get to you right away and do it cheap."
  • Write down the license plate number and driver's license number of anyone offering services.
  • Ask for before & after pictures of previous projects
  • Get a contract in writing. It should cover what work is to be done, cost  and the quality / brand of chemicals to be used.
  • Be careful that your signature on a contractor's bid is not an authorization to begin work.
  • Don't pay more that 20%-50% down for the contractor to begin work - depending on the type of the project . Then, pay periodically, according to the progress of the work.
  • If the contractor insists on payment for materials up front, then go with him or her to buy the materials or pay the supplier yourself.
  • Don't make final payment until the job is finished and you are satisfied with it.
  • Beware of the lowest bid. Contractors who low-ball are probably cutting corners or may not be experienced enough to do the job right
  • The " good faith estimate " -  $99 deck washing scam is the perfect example - at the end on average customer end up paying $250-$350 just for washing - ask about everything in writing
  • The most critical factor in choosing a contractor is how well you and he communicate. All things being equal, it's better to spend more and get someone you're comfortable with.
